Longevity
SMP typically lasts 3–7 years. But that range depends on several factors you can actually control. Here’s the full picture — including how to make yours last as long as possible.
The honest answer is that SMP lasts 3–7 years for the vast majority of clients before they choose to refresh it with a top-up session.
Some clients go 5+ years without needing any attention. Others prefer a lighter top-up after 3 years to keep results looking fresh and crisp. Crucially, SMP does not disappear — it fades gradually, lightening over time rather than vanishing.
SMP pigment is specifically formulated to fade naturally over time — unlike traditional tattoo ink which can turn blue-green as it ages. This is a deliberate design choice that keeps your result looking clean and natural for its entire life.
Factors that shorten lifespan
Factors that extend lifespan
Your skin type plays a significant role. Oily skin produces more sebum which can gradually break down pigment faster. This doesn’t mean SMP won’t work — it works beautifully on all skin types — but oily-skinned clients may find they want a top-up a little earlier.
Clients with dry skin tend to hold pigment particularly well. Keeping the scalp moisturised regardless of skin type helps maintain vibrancy.
UV radiation is the most significant accelerator of SMP fading. This doesn’t mean you can’t go outside — it simply means protecting your scalp with an SPF 30–50 on any day when the sun is strong. A quality scalp moisturiser with SPF built in covers both bases.
When your SMP has faded to the point where you’d like it refreshed, a single top-up session is all that’s needed. There’s no starting from scratch.
